This position is responsible for the execution of field trialing protocols that support various Breeding and Trait Development programs. Located in Saskatoon, SK this role is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and evaluating field trials for the purpose of delivering high quality data, in support of product advancement. This role will mainly be focused on Canola trait efficacy, chemistry, and yield trialing within the Western Canadian region.

As a Seed Science Operations Trait Development Agronomist, you create chemistry by...

• Managing small plot field trial from planting to harvest, including activities such as offsite trialing location identification, field or seedbed preparation, planting, scouting, in-crop pesticide applications, pest (insect and disease) identification & monitoring, phenotypic data collection throughout the season, harvesting, seed quality analysis, data reporting, presenting, etc.
• Managing resources within assigned location, with the goal of achieving all breeding & trait development objectives and effective operation of the program. This includes facility operation & management, equipment maintenance, inventory management, seasonal staff hiring & supervision, as well as participating in budget planning for the region.
• Adhering to stewardship, regulatory, and QMS compliance programs, policies, and procedures. This includes documentation, record keeping, data management, trial management, periodic trainings, audits, etc.
• Participating in the local EHS program to ensure all activities are being performed safely and responsibly, ensuring compliance with Responsible Care (RC) standards. This will include training of new employees and contributing to the safety culture within the team.
• Participating in regional planning and results meetings to establish alignment of protocols & resources, and to ensure trialing results are properly communicated and interpreted.
• Establishing and maintain industry presence and ensure that BASF is up to date on current industry activities by participating in meetings or tours, as well as establishing contacts with external parties. 

If you have...

• A M.S. in Biological Sciences, including Plant Pathology, Weed Science, Agronomy, or related field; OR B.S. in Agronomy related field, including Crop Science, Weed Science, Agronomy, Crop Systems in addition to 2 years of relevant experience; OR High School Diploma in addition to 8 years of relevant experience.
• Experience coordinating and conducting canola small plot research trials.
• Proficiency using agriculture research equipment and data collection tools including tractors, planters, sprayers, UAS, and combine harvesters.
• Experience with trialing software and data collection software.
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and modify plans as required to minimize impact on data and production as situations arise.
• Ability to work extended hours during peak field seasons.
• Assets: FAA Part 107 license or ability to obtain. Pesticide Applicators License. 
• Ability to obtain a Class 5G drivers license is required (Class 1A is an asset).
