DH Technician (2201507) – Saskatchewan Where the Chemistry Happens… Delivering Double haploid seed lines to the breeding program, meeting quality and purity requirements of breeding objectives. Performed thru DH project management and execution of projects from seed to harvest including manage and care of DH plant material through the greenhouse, with the goal of delivering material, meeting timelines of breeding programs locally and globally. Ensure high quality standards and timelines are met thru detailed project management and greenhouse activities adhering to all SOP and WI.. Formula for Success: You Will…- Assisting other technicians with projects also responsible for 1-2 projects under supervision of a senior technician including 1-2 traits. Co-ordinate projects, timelines and space of greenhouse with assistance..
- Production of tissue cultures required for DH production. (Microspore culture, embryo transfers, planting )
- Sample and assay preparation of leaf tissue from DH plantlets for ploidy and molecular analysis.
- Planting to harvest activities in Greenhouse for DH production.
- Project planning and tracking of DH material to ensure deadlines are met, detailed record keeping/tracking and monthly reporting.
- Ensure data is entered into specific data bases and DH inventory books are kept updated and accurate (Data entry using Microsoft Office Applications, PRISM, StarLims and sampling programs like Plantrak)
- Perform and coordinate seed logistical activities to ensure accurate movement, tracking, labeling and record keeping of DH seed within the greenhouse.
- Ensuring accurate data collection and management of seedlots which includes data entry into seed inventory
- Ensure all activities are carried out in support of health and safety guidelines, quality management, SOP’s, breeding protocols and other internal and external regulations as well as participate in the development and improvement of all the above processes as required.
Qualifications
Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…
- Degree in Agriculture / Biological Science Degree or Diploma with knowledge in plant tissue culture and plant care. Including aseptic technique and DH production
- Experience in Microsoft Office Applications
- Has organizational skills and pays attention to detail
- Able to work in a team atmosphere and commitment to a safe work environment.
- Lab and Greenhouse Experience is an asset
- Familiar with biotechnology applications, molecular biology, and genetics.
- Good organizational, time management and record keeping skills
- Laboratory practices, including media prep and aseptic technique
- Plant tissue culture techniques including but not limited to microspore culture and embryo culture.
- Greenhouse activities including plant maintenance, plant sampling for lab analysis, self-pollination, harvesting, seed preparation.
- Ability to learn computer data bases required for data interpretation
