We are seeking a professional to join the Automation, Controls and Electrical team within the North American (NA) Technical Expertise organization. In this role, you will provide Instrument & Controls, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), and Burner Management System engineering expertise to support site business units/operating divisions, safety‑related initiatives, and small, medium, and large capital projects. You will work closely with discipline engineers, project managers, plant operations, and maintenance teams to deliver complex engineering solutions.
You will be responsible for supporting new chemical plants, research laboratories, major expansions, debottlenecking efforts, and infrastructure projects. You will also provide technical leadership to I&C engineers and designers, both internal teams and third‑party engineering firms, through all project phases and special initiatives. Your responsibilities will include reviewing design documentation, understanding how system designs interface with manufacturing operations, and identifying opportunities to reduce cost, enhance sustainability, and establish best practices. Participation in cross‑functional teams, internal committees, and ad hoc assignments will be essential to your success in this role.

- Demonstrating your understanding of Instrumentation, Process Control, Fire & Gas, Safety Instrumented Systems (Triconex/HIMA), Distributed Control Systems (i.e. Foxboro/DeltaV/ABB), PLC’s (i.e. Allen Bradley/Modicon, etc), & Burner Management Systems, while providing technical direction, consultancy support, and guidance on these topics.
- Overseeing the design, specification, configuration, application, installation, and testing of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) & Burner Management Systems (BMS).
- Assisting in developing and maintaining instrument documentation, functional design specifications, P&IDs, control panel layout and design, and related engineering deliverables.
- Being responsible for the interpretation and adherence to BASF Technical Standards, industry standards (ISA 84 or IEC 61508/11, NEC, NFPA), and applicable regulatory and design codes, as applicable to specific projects and/or site initiatives.
- Diagnosing I/O related issues within PLC and remote IO systems, including Charms IO, etc.
- Supporting close collaboration with Process Engineers, Operations, and Maintenance teams. Including periodically leading or supporting SIS training, SIS dossier management, and assisting in the development of Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) and proof test procedures.
- Participating in hazard and risk assessments, including PHA, HAZOP, Functional Safety Assessments, and SIL studies.
- Applying appropriate reliability tools and methodologies to drive improvements, optimize costs with reduction, and improve Asset Effectiveness, utilizing strategies such as Equipment Criticality Assessments, Bad Actor Programs, FMEA, RBI, RBM, RCM, and Reliability Roadmaps
- Providing oversight and technical support to Capital projects during FEL, detailed design & engineering, construction, and commissioning (Design basis development, instrument & control manhour consolidation, and material take offs. Review and approval of Instrument & Control IFA/FC Packages. Define SIS scope and develop Safety Requirements Specifications. Configuration, programming and automation of HIMA and Triconex applications and systems. Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup activities).
If you have...
- A Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 10 + years of experience in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering.
- In-depth technical experience in process instrumentation and controls, including Fire & Gas, pressure, temperature, level, and flow measurement technology.
- Proven experience in designing, implementing, programming and commissioning PLCs, SIS and Burner Management Systems (BMS) control equipment/systems.
- Well-developed troubleshooting skills in instrumentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively in technical manufacturing discussions.
- A strong commitment to workplace safety and knowledge of local and national safety standards.
