  • As a lab Scientist of Engineering Plastics research in Shanghai, drive innovation and deliver technical solutions for research projects and Topics in the field of Flame Retardancy (FR) to address future business development needs in Industries.
  • Work closely with product development team to develop new FR formulation and process using existing & new technologies, methods etc. to contribute to the innovation sales of performance materials.
  • As core team member of FR R&D team report functionally to team leader in South Korea. Actively drive FR technology development and knowledge build-up in the Engineering Plastics field.


Main Tasks:

(1) Research Project Management       

  • Proactively drive FR research projects, closely follow up and achieve project milestones within timeline and budget.
  • Transform the project objectives into concrete work plans for FR lab team, analyze & interpret experimental results.
  • Develop new Flame Retardant Engineering Plastics (e.g. PA, PBT) formulation & processing solutions using existing and new technologies, methods etc. Constantly discuss and align the research activities with Product development team, sales & marketing, AD/TD, production teams in Shanghai and South Korea.
  • Develop new methods/procedures for FR compounding, testing or analysis within the Engineering Plastics R&D team.
  • Closely follow up and review scientific literatures, publications, patents and derive corresponding technology review conclusions for BASF
  • Present and document R&D project results, prepare research reports and file patents.

(2) Lab Team Leadership         

  • Instruct and coach the lab chemist for certain FR sub-projects to perform tasks under general leadership of experienced research scientist/team leader.
  • Implement and ensure BASF regulations and EHS compliances in the lab team activities   

(3) Other tasks       

  • Attend organized customer visits, seminars and conferences, as necessary. Support sales& marketing, TD/AD, and TPM of business unit as needed on related technical topics.
  • Proactively participate BASF innovation events in Shanghai Campus



  • Ph.D. in Chemistry/ Polymer Science/Polymer Engineering/ Chemical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years’ R&D experience on Flame retardancy of plastics or polymeric materials.
  • A proactive team player with strong entrepreneurial drive to move projects forward.
  • Having international R&D experience, and good knowledge on Engineering plastics formulation and/or processing would be a plus.
  • Well acquainted with standard IT applications, excellent written and spoken communication skills in English. Korean language proficiency would be a plus.
