Objectives:
- As lab scientist for Engineering Plastics Flame retardancy research in Shanghai, deliver technical solutions for complex research assignments in the field of Flame Retardancy (FR), to develop new FR formulation and process using existing & new technologies, methods etc.,
- Actively drive the technical development and knowledge gain for BASF in Engineering Plastics field. As core team member of FR R&D team report functionally to team leader in South Korea.
Main Tasks:
(1) Research Project Management
- Develop new Flame Retardant Engineering Plastics (e.g. PA, PBT) formulation & processing solutions using existing and new technologies, methods etc. Constantly discuss and align the research activities with Product development team, sales & marketing, AD/TD, production teams in Shanghai and South Korea.
- Transform the project objectives into work plans for FR lab team, analyze & interpret experimental results. Proactively drive research projects, closely watch and achieving project milestones within timeline and budget.
- Develop new methods/procedures for FR compounding, testing or analysis within the Engineering Plastics R&D team.
- Present and document results, prepare research reports and file patents.
(2) Lab Team Leadership
- Instruct and coach the lab chemist for certain FR subprojects; perform tasks under general leadership of experienced research scientist/team leader.
- Implement and ensure compliance with BASF standards regarding EHS in the lab team activities
(3) Scientific Research
- Continuously observe, analyze, assess scientific and technical trends in FR products, processes, applications, industries
- Closely follow and evaluate scientific literature, publications, IP and draw conclusions for BASF
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry with a primary focus on at least one of the following: polymer chemistry, physical/organic chemistry, material science or polymer process engineering.
- At least 5 years’ experience (including PhD period) in conducting scientific experiments on Flame retardancy of plastics or polymeric materials. Having international research experience and good knowledge on polymer formulation and/or processing would be a plus.
- Well acquainted with standard IT applications, excellent written and spoken communication skills in English.
- A proactive team player, who shows initiative and a self-starter with an outgoing personality who can seize opportunities and move projects forward.
