This role will lead advanced in-vitro hair performance testing, claims substantiation, and method development activities supporting new product innovation, customer projects, and scientific differentiation within the hair care portfolio. The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding BASF's expertise in textured and ethnic hair care while leveraging cutting-edge instrumental and imaging technologies.
As a Performance and Claims Specialist - Hair Care, you create chemistry by…
- Designing, executing, and interpreting in-vitro studies to evaluate hair care product performance and support technical and marketing claims.
- Operating advanced hair characterization equipment, including:
- Bolero Hair Motion Analysis System
- Diastron Tensile Testing Systems
- Zwick Mechanical Testing Systems
- Utilizing and developing advanced imaging and image analysis techniques to assess hair fiber morphology, surface condition, damage, shine, curl formation, frizz behavior, color retention, and treatment efficacy.
- Understanding how to utilize analytical techniques for material analysis and how they impact substrates is a plus.
- Developing innovative testing methodologies for evaluating hair strength, breakage resistance, curl retention, suppleness, conditioning, thermal protection, humidity resistance, and overall hair health.
- Analyzing and correlating instrumental and imaging data with consumer-perceived hair benefits and performance claims, using effective data visualization to clearly communicate scientific findings and product performance.
- Supporting projects involving textured, curly, coily, and ethnically diverse hair types.
- Collaborating with formulation scientists, clinical and consumer scientists, marketing, global R&D teams, and customers to drive innovation and scientific excellence.
If you…
- Hold a bachelor's degree in Hair Science, Cosmetic Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or related scientific discipline. Advanced degree strongly preferred.
- Bring minimum 5 years of experience in hair performance testing, cosmetic science, fiber characterization, materials testing, or related fields.
- Possess hands-on experience with instrumental performance testing and data analysis.
- Have strong understanding of hair fiber structure, mechanics, and performance evaluation.
Preferred
- Deep expertise in hair science and cosmetic hair care technologies.
- Experience with ethnic, textured, curly, and coily hair care evaluation.
- Proficiency in advanced imaging techniques, digital image analysis, microscopy, and image-based performance assessment.
- Experience utilizing hair characterization tools such as Bolero, Diastron, Zwick, and related instrumentation.
- Background in materials science, polymer science, surface science, or fiber mechanics.
- Proven track record in method development and claims substantiation.

Pay transparency
BASF is committed to pay transparency practices. The competitive pay range for this role is $112,000 - 140,000. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
