We are looking for a Scientist II - CASE market to join our Care Chemicals team in Southfield, MI.

The purpose of the job is to utilize strong technical expertise in the application of principles of chemistry and chemical engineering with special emphasis on surfactants and dispersants. It will also require strong statistical analysis and design of experiments tools to provide value-added technical solutions to unmet general market and specific customer needs in the application area of CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants and Elastomers) Raw Materials; which include surfactants for emulsion polymerization and aqueous emulsification of polymer resins and polyethylene glycols and polypropylene glycols for the synthesis of urethane and non-urethane based rheology modifiers.

 

As a Scientist II - CASE market, you create chemistry by…

  • Collaborating with Technical Service Industry Managers, Marketing, and Product Management to translate the identified unmet customer and market needs in the areas of emulsion polymerization, aqueous emulsification of polymeric resins, and rheology of coatings formulations into well-defined technical criteria for planning and execution of scientific projects which provide optimized and value-added technical solutions
  • Developing robust and optimized technical solutions to unmet customer and market needs through utilization of broad Industrial Formulators’ portfolio of surfactants, water soluble polymers, chelates, and acids.
  • Developing presentations that capture and promote the value proposition of the Industrial Formulators division portfolio ingredients for addressing the customer and market needsP
  • Presenting the findings and solutions at external scientific meetings and industry events
  • Interacting and exchanging information with global BASF Care Chemicals research groups
  • Proposing new ideas to enable research & development groups develop novel technologies and approaches to address needs of CASE customers and market.

 

If you…

 

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering; with a minimum of 1 to 2 years of research experience that includes exposure in the area of emulsion polymerization and surfactants.
  • Possess a strong foundation in chemical engineering and chemistry, supported by experience in designing and conducting organic reactions. Apply this technical expertise to translate unmet customer and market needs into clear technical success criteria, enabling the identification and development of optimized, value-added solutions leveraging the existing Industrial Formulators portfolio of surfactants and dispersants.
  • Are able to build relationships with technical counterparts in other regions with the purpose of increasing the speed for finding optimum solutions and to transfer solutions found in other regions to North American customers’ and market needs.
  • Are skilled and bring previous experience in managing multiple projects at once, and create promotional literature in collaboration with marketing to promote the sales of BASF products. Collaboration with fellow scientists on Industrial Formulators Team to find effective solutions efficiently is expected.
  • Bring excellent oral and written communication skills and are able to successfully interact with a variety of personnel including scientists, production engineers, marketing, sales, regulatory and R&D management. Participation and presentation on research findings on a periodic basis at internal meetings and external conferences in the application area of CASE is expected.
