Our Service Unit Global Intellectual Property is one of the biggest inhouse IP units in Germany. We are responsible for all services relating to patents, trademarks, trade secrets, plant variety protection, copyrights, designs and IP Intelligence, as well as all IP-contracts. We are a global team servicing the entire BASF group and work in close alliance with the operating business units as well as with the research and technology platforms. In this way we create a basis for future business success and actively influence BASF's competitive situation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking for a Patent Counsel turning digital innovation into effective IP value. Our multidisciplinary, international team supports BASF's cutting-edge digital innovation pipeline ranging from artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, quantum computing to sustainability in chemicals. The role focusses on artificial intelligence for applications in the chemical industry.

 

  • In this role you actively shape BASF's IP position by consulting innovation teams on matters of digital IP. 
  • The core tasks are identifying patentable ideas with business impact, building and maintaining patent portfolios in different technology areas as well as advising the teams on IP in partnerships. 
  • You are also going to evaluate patent landscapes and derive strategic measures (freedom to operate, invalidity, licensing strategies). 
  • You advise the innovation teams on technological aspects in contractual matters, partnerships and M&A activities. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • degree (M.Sc. or PhD) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computational Science, Business Informatics, Mathematics, Theoretical Chemistry, Quantum Chemistry, Computational Chemistry or related fields
  • technological experience in data science, machine learning, generative AI and their latest developments is an advantage
  • proven technical understanding or certified training(s) in the digital technology environment, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence, data science and data technology
  • qualified as European or German Patent Attorney; alternatively, national qualification in- or outside Europe or interest in training to become a European Patent Attorney 
  • (first) experience inhouse or in a patent law firm is a plus
  • strong communication skills in English 
  • curious and open minded with a sound understanding of business interests in digital environment
